We were lucky and caught some viscacha, or Andes rabbits. They blended in so well with the rocks that we almost missed them!

I really like that that you had a private tour, it is so nice when you can set the pace and decide on the stops. So neat that you saw all thse animals and birds. I have never heard of a Vicuna. I would love to feel the fur. Thanks for sharing on #TheWeeklyPostcard.

We had never heard of vicuña before either, and it was cool to get to see them. Thanks for the invite to #TheWeeklyPostcard! I’m loving sharing my trips and learning about others too!

  • What a fabulous road trip! I have often wondered what the difference between llamas and alpacas is. We have them in Australia on farms – most are alpacas but there are also a few llamas.

    • Sarah

I never knew how to tell them apart until this trip and it was kind of a fun game to try to pick them out since both are so plentiful in Peru. We have more Llamas here in TN as “guards” to protect the sheep.

  • Got to admit, we never really knew the difference between alpaca and llamas. Now we do! We’ve heard about Coca Tea for altitude sickness. Hadn’t heard about the possible effect on drug tests – good to know! Thanks for sharing on #TheWeeklyPostcard.

    • Sarah

I never knew the difference either, but you get lots of practice in Peru!

  • Never had the chance to see any llamas in their natural habitat before! Such a beautiful area! Thanks for linking up with #TheWeeklyPostcard!

    • Sarah

I hadn’t either. The trip to Colca Valley was a last minute addition on our trip, and we are
      glad we did it!

  • We loved Peru as well. The Chivay market was a highlight for us. As well as the condors at Colca Canyon. Sounds like you had a fabulous trip too! #theweeklypostcard

Yes! We loved Chivay as well. That was our first introduction to the different types of hats the ladies wear to denote their region. Colca Valley had some of my all-time favorite views of the gorgeous terracing. Love swapping stories about this great country and connecting with fellow travelers! #theweeklypostcard
